Hastings' top businesses will be enjoying a special piece of art when they claim their business awards this month.

Local artist Ricks Terstappen has again designed the BYRDS trophies for Hastings City Business Award winners.

Terstappen said the steel statues of two birds facing each other were a sign of freedom which in his eyes is an important part of business.

"The other important feeling the trophy should give is a feeling of togetherness, communication, collaboration and of course friendship - all important ingredients for a well run business," he said.

Mr Terstappen will be creating nine trophies for the awards.

Hastings City business events and promotions manager Andrea Taaffe said the trophies lifted the awards' stature.

"To have an artist of Ricks' calibre create these trophies for the awards is truly a privilege, not only does the winner receive a trophy they receive a piece of art," she said.

The awards ceremony will take place on Friday, July 20, at the Hawke's Bay Opera House, Hastings.
