A person has died following a crash near Takapau in Central Hawke's Bay on Thursday night.
Emergency services were called to the two-car collision on State Highway 2 at about 5.55pm on Thursday.
A St John Ambulance spokeswoman said a second person was taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital by ambulance with moderate injuries.
A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokeswoman said one person was trapped and was cut out of their vehicle.
Two ambulances attended the scene.
The Serious Crash Unit attended and left the scene at 4am. According to police,
diversions and traffic management was put in place and the road was temporarily closed.
The road has since reopened.

Emergency services also attended another crash in Takapau in the early hours of Friday morning.
A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokeswoman said a car rolled on Otawhao Rd at about 12.13am on Friday.
A St John spokeswoman said two people sustained moderate injuries and were transported to Hawke's Bay Hospital.
Two fire trucks were sent and fire fighters assisted police and ambulance.
