You could not wipe the smiles off the faces of the sick children at Hawke's Bay Hospital yesterday when three Magpies players gave their undivided attention, handing out goodie bags and spending time with the families.
Tim Farrell, Hannon Brighouse and Jason Long made the special lunch time visit, held to kick start the annual Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal.
Countdown Regional Group Manager for Hawke's Bay, Taupo and Gisborne, Wayne Dohmen said "the Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal shows that there are many ways everyday Kiwis can assist our children on the road to a healthier life - you don't have to be a doctor or nurse to help."
"We see this appeal as part of a commitment to giving back to local communities and supporting good causes that make life that little bit better for future generations."
Since launching in 2007, the appeal has raised $11 million nationally for the purchase of medical equipment for hospitals around the country and more than $824,000 in Hawke's Bay alone. Last year's $113,349 for Hawke's Bay Hospital went towards a children's Ward isolation room and outside space, as well as a colposcope for the paediatrics area.
Last year, the Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal raised more than $1.26 million for 13 children's wards across the country and this year they are hoping to raise 1.3 million for 20 children's wards across the country - more hospitals than ever before.
"As adults we often take not only our own health, but the health of our family for granted. Unfortunately for some children and families, serious illness can be an unfortunate reality and can be a very stressful time in a child and parent's life."
"It is this desire to help children get well and to support both the families and the amazing doctors and nurses at Hawke's Bay Hospital, that do such an outstanding job caring for the sick, that continues to inspire us."
Medical Director, Dr Phil Moore said without the money, it would take them a lot longer to fund the improvements and equipment.
"It is very important and has been something we look forward to each year."
Hastings Boys' High School Pasifika group, Tama Akina and ABC, A Beststart Education and Care Centre in Hastings performed at the appeal launch.
