It's going to be a weekend of two halves according to the Metservice.
Hawke's Bay residents have been making the most of the sunny weather during the week, with overnight temperatures not nearly as frosty as previous weeks.
While western areas of the country will be struck with icy temperatures, rain and gale force winds, Hawke's Bay will get off relatively lightly.
The wettest weather is expected for the West Coast, and rain is set to spread to the North Island for Sunday.
MetService meteorologist John Law said for the North Island the weekend would begin with drier conditions beneath a short-lived ridge of higher pressure.
"It'll be an east-west split across the North Island this weekend."
"The best of the brightness will be out in the east for places like Gisborne and Hawke's Bay, while cloudier conditions will prevail in the west."
Law said Hawke's Bay would experience some windy conditions as the weekend progressed and said the best day for weekend activities would be tomorrow."Sunday is looking quite wet and windy, but it won't be gale force winds like last time."
While western areas of the country would bear the brunt of the bad weather, Law said Hawke's Bay would be sheltered by the ranges.
Although rain was forecast for Sunday, it would be short lived as the region was in for more sunshine and relatively warm conditions for the beginning of next week.
"Sunday will be an improving day, rain will continue to track northwards through the day, leaving some brighter conditions but there will still be some showers to keep an eye out for."
"This weekend is another great example of the wettest weather in the west and the strongest winds in the east."
"Unfortunately, it's another weekend to keep up with the latest forecasts and Severe Weather Watches and Warnings."
