Polling place managers in Mahora and Frimley reported a "steady" flow of Hastings voters this afternoon but all had just one person voting when Hawke's Bay Today visited.
In Mahora Peter Dorn strapped his helmet firmly on his head and nervously rode his bicycle to vote at St John's Presbyterian Church.
Blind in one eye, the retiree said he waited for someone to offer him a ride to an early voting place and received no offers.
After finishing their shift at the nearby Unichem Stortford Lodge Pharmacy Meredith, Martin-Hope and Hannah Duncan walked to Frimley School in their uniforms to vote.
Both said they did not vote early because they were still making up their minds and both also preferred to vote on the last day.
"There is a special significance to voting on the traditional voting day," Ms Duncan said.
At Aubyn Live Theatre in Mahora, sisters Jenna-Marama Tipu and Kelly Tipu said voting together was a family tradition.
They said they couldn't vote earlier because they were busy working at Wattie's and any spare time was spent persuading family and friends to vote.
"If you are not there you are not making history," Jenna-Marama Tipu said.
"I want my babies to have a good future."
