To piece together the final hours of a Wairoa man's life, Police are urging the motorist thought to be involved to come forward.
Wairoa resident Nigel Sammons, 33, is believed to have been killed in a hit and run, after his body was found by a police patrol at the intersection of Black and Rutherford Sts just before 5am on Sunday.
Police are continuing to investigate whether his death was the result of a hit and run.
"Should that be the case, we urge the driver of this vehicle, or anyone who may have been a passenger, to come forward", a police spokeswoman said yesterday.
"Only the driver would be able to establish the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr Sammons."
Police have asked the public to inform them if they know of a vehicle that may have received damage to the front since Saturday, or who may have knowledge about a vehicle being hidden, repaired or cleaned in unusual circumstances.
Police have also appealed to the public for information about the Wairoa incident, asking anyone who was in the area of Black St between 4am and 5am on Sunday to come forward.
Mr Sammons body was returned to his family earlier this week after a post-mortem was completed.
His whanau could not be reached yesterday.
