A cyclist is in a critical condition and has sustained "major leg injuries" after being involved in a car crash this morning.

Senior Sergeant Dan Foley of Eastern District Command Centre said police had been called to the crash in Hastings just after 9 this morning, where there had been a collision between a car and cyclist.

The crash occurred near Hastings St South, and Southampton St East.

The cyclist had been taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital in a serious condition, with "fairly serious leg injuries".

This afternoon a Hawke's Bay District Health Board spokeswoman said the cyclist - a man in his 50's - was in a critical condition.
