Another arm of a Napier legal family has stretched out with the admission to the criminal bar this week of barrister Victoria Callinicos.
She's the daughter of Napier lawyer Kevin Callinicos and niece of Judge Peter Callinicos, of the Family Court, both of whom were present for Wednesday's ceremony.
Her father was moving counsel in the High Court in Napier before Judge Denis Clifford who invited Judge Callinicos and Napier-based Central Region executive Judge Bridget Mackintosh to sit with him during the short ceremony.
Mrs Callinicos, 23, a former pupil of Reignier and Taradale Intermediate schools and Deputy Head Girl at Napier Girls High School, is thought to be the third generation in the family to practice, dating back to great-grandfather Erwin Molony, and is working for Napier firm Willis Legal.
Keen on law from a young age, she has a cousin studying law at Canterbury University, from where she graduated after five years with an LLB and a BA majoring in psychology and minoring in sociology.
Away from studies she has been successful in yachting, representing New Zealand in a European Optimist championships in 2008, but the yachting lapsed since the demise of the yacht club in Christchurch in the Canterbury earthquakes.
She did, however, enable to reach another sporting goal, last year completing the Christchurch Marathon.
