An early morning assult left three people with injuries.

Police are investigating the "unprovoked attack" which occurred about 1am this morning in Greenmeadows, Napier.

Three friends were walking near the intersection of Atherfold Crescent and Curie Street where they were approached by a group of at least 5 males, described as Maori and aged between 17 and 25-years-old.

The group demanded belongings from the friends before assaulting two of them and taking a cell phone and watch.


The victims received facial injuries and one was thought to have been knocked unconscious for a short time.
