A hunter has been accidentally shot and killed in the Ruahine Range in Central Hawke's Bay.

A rescue helicopter is en route to the man who is near the Sparrowhawk Track.

Police were alerted around 11.30am by a member of a hunting party.

A rescue helicopter from Palmerston North is on its way to the scene and search and rescue teams are being organised to go into the park if necessary.


A dog is also believed to have been injured.

Details about the dead man or the circumstances of the shooting are yet to be confirmed.
