A nod to 1940s fashion is key for Hunt & Seek Fashion in the Field hopefuls.
The theme will run throughout this year's event with sophistication, class and elegance all favourable qualities sought by a judging panel comprising Fashion Quarterly editor Sally-Ann Mullin, Rhythm & Vines founder Hamish Pinkham and Hawke's Bay Today fashion writer Amy Shanks.
The competition, which takes place during Bostock New Zealand's Spring Racing Carnival Livamol Classic on Saturday, features five categories from avant garde/young designer to headwear, classic men and women's racewear.
Event organiser Kelly du Toit says entrants need to carefully consider every element of their outfit from head to toe - including accessories, make-up and the perfect hairstyle.
"There's a bit of a 1940s look coming in now with the midi skirts and full A-line - it's super feminine with some quite quirky hats," she says.
The overall male or female winner will get a trip for two to Hawaii staying four nights that the Outrigger resort in Waikiki, a pair Spex eyewear and a bottle of Nicolas Feuillate champagne.
Category winners can take home designer sunglasses, custom jewellery, clothing vouchers, a trip to the Ellerslie races in Auckland and more.
"People need to understand the competition is really high now - it's not just locals competing, people come from out of town," she said.
"I think it's about getting in there with the best look, it's about shoes and accessories, really well thought out little details and colour co-ordination go hand in hand."
It is not just fashion people need to master - but an air of composure - Mr Pinkham will be looking out for bright smiles, and some attitude when contestants show off their stuff.
"Fashion wise something current, someone who's having some fun, a lot of confidence, a bit of swagger and someone who looks like they are enjoying themselves," he said.
Entry to the competition is free with forms to be completed at the Fashion Marquee on Saturday right up until midday or prior to the event at Hawke's Bay Racing.
The first well-heeled foot should step on to the runway at 1.40pm - starting with avant garde/young designer, followed by Spex Headwear, Hunt & Seek Classic Menswear and Unio Classic Womenswear.
Once all categories are complete an overall winner will be named.
