A Napier City councillor's son could face jail time after a New Year's Eve incident where he attacked three people at a party on Marine Parade.
Donovan Gene Hannay was found guilty in Napier District Court yesterday of two counts of wounding with reckless disregard and one count of assaulting a female.
The 24-year-old is the son of Napier city councillor Michelle Pyke.
In the early hours of January 1 this year, Hannay became involved in a confrontation at the party and was asked to leave by a woman. The dispute quickly escalated and Hannay became embroiled in a physical confrontation where he lashed out striking the woman and a man with a glass bottle.
The attack left the female with a 4cm laceration above her right eyebrow, requiring seven stitches, while the male victim received a 3cm gash to the back of his head and required four staples.
When leaving the address Hannay then allegedly assaulted another man on the front porch. But charges for this incident were dismissed.
During his deliberations, Judge Tony Adeane said the claim of self-defence "can not have any place in the case".
He was "satisfied beyond reasonable doubt" the 24-year-old, who appeared in the dock on crutches, was guilty of the charges and cited Hannay's "heavy intoxication" and brandishing a glass bottle as reckless behaviour.
Hannay has been remanded in custody until his sentencing on May 26.
Ms Pyke maintained her son's innocence yesterday. "It's a pretty sick society when a victim ends up in jail for being assaulted," she said.
Ms Pyke claimed her son was assaulted on the night.
The councillor said they would be appealing the decision and would also be making a complaint to the Police Complaints Authority.
