A new Hawke's Bay company offering mobile maths mentoring to students wants to improve achievement levels in the subject among students while making it "fun and engaging".
The Maths Truck was launched on Monday and was established by businessman and tutor Andrew Baker, who aims to make maths "engaging, fun and easily accessible" to young children and families.
He said he was inspired by celebrity chef Michael Van de Elzen's Food Truck.
"I want to form a partnership with schools around Hawke's Bay, I'm meeting with principals at the moment and already have Te Mata School signed up, where I'll park the truck on the school grounds and kids will come out for extra maths tuition."
He said children in New Zealand are doing particularly poorly in the subject when compared to other developed countries. "There is not enough funding going into education and the class sizes are just too big.
"Too often maths has the tendency and perception to be quite serious but I want to make it fun and engaging."
He said with busy lives and conflicting priorities, parents often struggled to find the time to juggle the multitude of extra curricular, extension and after-school activities kids had on offer.
"The Maths truck makes maths tuition easily accessible and convenient for families because tuition can be delivered during school time or at a location close to school or home."
He said the goal when establishing the company was to "fundamentally change" how children feel about, and therefore achieve, in maths.
"The Maths Truck provides an engaging, vibrant, fun environment for children to develop and enhance their maths ability.
"The learning environment engages children in a way that appeals to those not always interested in maths, or those who have developed negative associations with the subject in the past."
The funky, colourful, 1968 retro caravan, has been refurbished and is filled with maths resources, technology and fun, enriching maths games.
He said the truck will visit local schools and after school programmes, for children aged five to 12.
Mr Baker hopes to expand the service into other areas in 2014.
