Workers at Mackersey Construction are downing tools and lacing up sneakers in an effort to help out a fellow worker.
On Christmas Eve last year, after a successful first year as a building apprentice, 19-year-old Sam Ebbett was diagnosed with leukemia, and never returned to work.
"He left work on Friday and was diagnosed on Saturday," site supervisor Gavin Mackay said. "It's a very sad situation for his family and for us."
The teenager was currently undergoing treatment in Palmerston North Hospital.
An idea to raise money was discussed over smoko and the plan to stage a fun-run, bike and walk event was hatched.
This Saturday his colleagues will hit Pakowhai Country Park to clock up a few kilometres of effort with a view to accumulating enough cash to help Sam's family out.
The teenager entered the building trade straight from Karamu High School and was described as "a great worker" by his supervisor.
"Yeah he was showing real promise. He has a great work ethic and is well liked. That's why so many of us jumped at the chance to help him out with this.
"We hope to drive down to Palmerston North and see him after the event and present his family with a cheque."
Members of the public are invited to participate this Saturday at Pakowhai Country Park, from 8am-2pm. "People can run, bike or walk at their own pace. We'll be hosting a free barbecue after."
Sponsorship and donations can be made on the day, or call Mackersey Construction's office on (06) 876 0252.
