The burglars who broke into the Busy Bees Educational Childcare Centre and stole two bottles of milk may be wondering why their tea or coffee tastes strange.
The explanation is simple - it is human breast milk. "I hope they are enjoying drinking it," said centre manager Shona Dean.
Busy Bees in Dannevirke has been closed over the Christmas-New Year period and, on Monday, when staff and children returned, all was well. However, on Tuesday morning, they discovered the centre had been broken into.
"The burglars gained entry through a back window which they forced open," Mrs Dean said.
"They took our ... computer which has all the children's photos from our Christmas parties, their records and some of their learning stories on them, and our digital camera.
"They even unplugged the printer but didn't take it. Nor did they touch the television or video player."
Oddly, the burglars made off with only one of two hammers, which were beginning to get old anyway and were replaced on Monday.
The break-in was the third for the centre, although Mrs Dean said the last incident was 11 years ago.
"On previous occasions, they have only taken food such as tea and coffee and they did take our coffee percolator. This time, they didn't touch the food items, only the milk," she said.
The offenders had not touched any of the children's work or displays and made their way out the back door.
"I was hoping 2012 was going to be a better year than last year but this is not a good start," Mrs Dean said.
"However, it could have been a lot worse and they could have done substantial damage. If nothing else, we would like the children's photos and work back."
Police, who were at the centre on Tuesday to take fingerprints, intrigued the children.
Shayla-May Hape, 4, said the policeman was not scary and she enjoyed watching him work.
"He had a little suitcase with a brush in it. He also had a radio and we could hear people talking on it, which was cool," she said.
"Some bad people came into our school and stole our computer with all of our photos on it.
"They are not nice and when we catch them, we should tie them up and give them a smack on the bottom.".
Maya Hape also has a strong opinion on the best thing that should be done to the culprits when they are caught.
"They should be locked up."
