Napier police are investigating an alleged incident in Taradale last Thursday where a 6-year-old girl said a man had got out of a car and chased her.
A police spokesperson said the incident was reported about 4.15pm.
The girl is understood to have been in the driveway of a Church Rd address when the man pulled up in a black people mover vehicle.
She said the man approached her and tried to grab her.
As she ran off her 9-year-old brother came out of the house and told police later he had seen the man chasing his sister.
The man was described as Caucasian, with blond hair, and a distinctive dragon tattoo on his forearm and two earrings in his left ear.
He was wearing a black T-shirt and green shorts.
The children said he ran to his vehicle and sped off along Church Rd in the direction of Wharerangi Rd.
Police described the youngster as shaken but unharmed.
"We are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen a car and a person fitting the descriptions," the spokesperson said.
Anyone with information is asked to call Napier Police on 831 0700.
