A horror crash in 2009, which took the lives of two local teenagers, was central to the Youth Alcohol Expo held in Hawke's Bay.
Tori Morrison, the mother of crash survivor Ben Morrison, spoke to students about how the crash had affected her and her family.
She spoke to students about the nightmare of receiving an early-morning phone call telling her Ben had been involved in a crash.
Ben, who was 18 at the time of the incident, received critical injuries.
He was among seven teenagers in the van driven by a 16-year-old learner driver, in the early hours of October 31, 2009.
Teenagers Robert Waikari and Max Harman, both 17, died after the driver lost control and swerved into the path of an oncoming car.
The van ended upside down on a bridge railing.
Robert, Max and a teenage girl were catapulted over the SH50 bridge in Taradale into the Tutaekuri River 15 metres below.
