Hawke's Bay walkers are being challenged to complete a virtual walk from Te Mata Peak to Bluff in two months.
Participants will wear pedometers in an effort to clock up 1300kms - the distance from the top of the peak to the bottom of the South Island.
The iWalk Challenge is part of the Hastings District Council's iWay project, which aims to increase walking and cycling.
IWay Project Manager Owen Mata said entries would be accepted from teams of five walkers or individuals, and pedometers could be worn at work, at home or to see friends - anywhere you go on foot.
The Hawke's Bay District Health Board has taken 200 pedometers for staff to wear in an effort to get them walking.
"It may seem a long way to Bluff but you will be surprised how many kilometres you will clock up if you wear the pedometer all day," Mr Mata said.
Participants can use their own pedometers or buy one for $4 from reception at the Hastings District Council or Dentons Pharmacy in Havelock North.
The iWay walking challenge begins on Tuesday. For more information see www.iwalk.co.nz.
