NOSTALGIA IS HAWKE'S Bay's original Designer Recycled womenswear store, started 21 years ago by owner Diana Matthews in a little shop on Heretaunga St, Hastings. Diana relocated the store to 8 Havelock Rd in Havelock North in 2001.
Diana has a small team, assisted by loyal helper Gene Herrick, and daughter Susie Devonshire.
We all have a passion for fashion! Nostalgia is an eclectic treasure trove of recycled designer women's clothing, footwear and accessories. It dovetails in with the other stores in the boutique shopping destination of Havelock North, with a quirky offering. We give new life to beautiful womenswear, free up cash for sellers, and best of all, supply discerning buyers with designer items at exceptional prices. Susie answers our questions.
How would you describe Bay fashion?
Stylishly casual, but people also love to dress up. Fashion in the Bay has come a long way in the last decade.
How do you select the garments you sell?
We sell on behalf of clients. We are vigilant about quality. Only selling top NZ and international designer labels. Items must be new or nearly new and in absolutely perfect condition. The quality must pass the test of owner Diana's eagle eye. What should shoppers look for when buying "pre loved" clothes and shoes? It's an opportunity to buy great labels. Look out for natural fibres in cotton, silk, linen and wool. Leather footwear and accessories. Check for signs of wear and tear, alterations or missing buttons.
What five items should every woman have in their wardrobes permanently?
1.A pair of well cut neutral trousers or jeans.
2.A simple shirt in cotton, silk or linen.
3.A merino cardigan.
4.A classic dark dress to suit your shape.
5.A colourful top.
How do you know if a colour suits you?
You'll look glowing and healthy. People will notice "you the person" not "the colour" you are wearing.
What is your favourite fashion era and why?
I love the world of fashion today. Women have freedom to create their own personal signature, whatever their age. Finding your own style without limitation, rather than slavishly following trends.
I love mixing designer pieces with high street gems, but always dress for comfort too.
There are excellent sources of inspiration everywhere - in the media, online, plenty to fuel the imagination. So just go for it.
What's the worst fashion faux pas women make? B
uying something because it's on sale, even though it doesn't suit them, then never wearing it. Not investing in natural fabrics.
What's your favourite accessory?
Scarves are brilliant for introducing colour and interest to a basic outfit. Pick out your favourite colours, in natural fibres. You can never have too many.
