Reese Witherspoon has hilariously live-tweeted the premiere of Big Little Lies 2.

The new season introduced Meryl Streep as Mary Louise Wright, the mother of Perry Wright (Alexander Skarsgard) who was killed at the end of Season 1.

Mary Louise is sceptical of the so-called "Monterey Five", including daughter-in-law Celeste (Nicole Kidman) and her friends Madeline (Witherspoon), Renata (Laura Dern), Bonnie (Zoe Kravitz) and Jane (Shailene Woodley).

Mary Louise delivers a series of stinging rebukes to Madeline, including calling her short and in the same breath saying she finds "little people to be untrustworthy".

Witherspoon wasn't having it — on the show or in real life, tweeting "shorties unite".

She then tweeted, "Perry's mum sure knows how to make an introduction! #BLL2" and then wrote "I mean … how rude".

Social media was standing behind Witherspoon's character.

Witherspoon and Kidman, who executive produce the series, have also negotiated huge pay raises for season 2.

Kidman and Witherspoon received $US350,000 and $USA250,000 per episode respectively for the first season but are now getting $US1 million an episode, even higher than Streep's $US800,000 per episode.

Woodley and Dern are reportedly getting $US500,000 per episode, while Kravitz gets $US428,000 an episode.
