NEW YORK (AP) — Filmmaker Paul Schrader says he's hoping "First Reformed" isn't his last film, but if it is, at least it's a good one.

The 71-year-old screenwriter and director says while he generally has a next film in mind, he's taking a breather to see how his latest film is received. "First Reformed" stars Ethan Hawke as an upstate New York pastor whose faith is shaken after he's unable to save a parishioner.

Shrader says he was surprised to discover how much the film parallels one of his early screenwriting successes, "Taxi Driver."

"Taxi Driver" was born out of a time when Schrader was drinking heavily and living in his car.

"First Reformed" incorporates elements of Schrader's Calvinist upbringing in Michigan.
