Olympic rowers Mahe Drysdale and Juliette Haigh have become a triple with the arrival of their first child.

The couple welcomed a baby girl into the world on Friday night.

She was born by caesarean section weighing 10lb 3oz (4.81kg).

Drysdale was tight-lipped about their new bundle of joy when contacted by the Herald on Sunday last night but later tweeted "Mum and Baby D are doing gr8".

This year Haigh said the sporting golden couple were "very excited" about the pregnancy.

"It is great news so soon after getting married and it will mark a new chapter in life for us both," she said.

"We are both really just very excited and haven't got into full baby planning mode yet or discussed what impact it might have on our careers."

The couple didn't find out the baby's sex before her birth, saying they wanted it to be surprise. The pair began dating seven years ago.
