A week of controversy hasn't translated into extra viewers for The GC.

The hyped TV3 reality show featuring a group of New Zealand Maori living on Australia's Gold Coast lost 80,000 viewers when the second episode aired last night.

Last week's debut was TV3's top-rating show for the day with 370,660 viewers. It beat both the 3 News bulletin at 6pm, and current affairs show Campbell Live at 7pm.

But last night's episode rated at 289,480 according, to statistics from

That's a drop of around 19 per cent.

It also rated third in the 8pm time slot, with TV One's Animal Rescue getting 527,010 viewers, and TV2's 2 Broke Girls scoring 456,890.

Reviewers haven't been kind about The GC, and the show was yesterday attacked by the organisation Women in Film and Television for its portrayal of women.

But it has found fans online, with so many people talking about the show the hashtag #TheGC began trending worldwide.
