Ryan Reynolds
and
Scarlett Johansson
have separated, ending their two-year marriage, the couple announced in a joint statement today.
"After long and careful consideration on both our parts, we've decided to end our marriage," Reynolds' rep said in a statement. "We entered our relationship with love and it's with love and kindness we leave it.
"While privacy isn't expected, it's certainly appreciated."
So what happened to one of Hollywood's most private couples?
Sources say the couple quietly went their separate ways about six months ago, and that Johansson initiated the split.
However, another source
says the couple split two weeks ago, noting that the separation is amicable and that "they are being very civil about it."
The source adds that distance was a major contributor to the downfall of their marriage.
"The big problem with their relationship is the distance," says the source. "They spent a lot of time apart when they are working...She's been unhappy for a while."
Rumours surfaced last month that the couple were having "troubles" due to their work schedules. Reynolds was noticeably absent when his wife hosted
Saturday Night Live
in November. But despite speculation there was trouble in paradise, their reps were quick to deny the reports.
Johansson, 26, began dating Reynolds, 34, in 2007. The couple tied the knot during a private ceremony (sensing a theme here) at a Canadian retreat in 2008.
Earlier this year Johansson gushed about her marriage: "I mean, you're married and suddenly you have your own family," she said. "There's a nice comfort in that. That part of your life is certain, in a way. You've got your home in that other person."
Reynolds was crowned Sexiest Man Alive by
People
magazine this year, and his missus was named GQ's Babe of the Year.
So they're both hot to trot and back on the market, boys and girls. Form an orderly queue!
Oh, I can feel a song coming on...
Catch you later in the week for more mischief, kids.
