It's comforting to know that not even the world's most famous actors find auditions easy.
Drew Barrymore, Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Evans and more have revealed the auditions they remember for all the wrong reasons.
JOSH BROLIN:
The actor auditioned to star in The Fly II, a sequel to 1986's The Fly about an eccentric scientist who begins to transform into a fly after an experiment goes wrong.
But as Brolin told The Hollywood Reporter, it did not go well.
"I was living in New York at the time, and I went in there, and he's in a cocoon, transforming into a fly," Brolin explained. "So I walked in, and I started reading. You do the voice, and you're like, [choking sounds] you know, doing your thing. And I ended up on the floor, frothing at the mouth.
"I got back to my apartment, and there was already a message on my machine from my agent that said: 'What the f**k did you do in there? You scared them.' I said, 'Well, did I get it?' That was the worst audition I ever did."
FELICITY HUFFMAN:
The Desperate Housewives star tried to 'enhance her assets' for an audition but it backfired spectacularly.
"I was going in for the ingénue, and I put on my dress and I realised that I just wasn't quite chesty enough," Huffman explained.
"So I took toilet paper, and I stuffed my bra. Then I went in and did a terrible audition, for a movie, with the director and the fancy people in the room, and it just laid there like a dead fish and I was like, 'Well, thank you so much.'
"I leaned down to get my bag and somehow, the arm of toilet paper - it was God's joke - came and went out of my dress like that. So I had to pick up my ego and my toilet paper and walk out of the room."
CHRIS EVANS:
The actor told Backstage that he's "pretty s**tty" at auditioning and revealed how he completely stuffed up his audition for Ben Affleck's Gone Baby Gone.
"I walked in and I'm walking down the halls looking for this room, and as I passed a room I heard, 'There he is'," Evans recalled.
"In my head I was like, 'That's Ben.' I turned around and it was, and for some reason I instantly was nervous. I went in and shook his hand, and the first thing I said was 'Hey, how ya doing - am I gonna be OK where I parked?' And he said, 'Where'd you park?' And I said, 'At one of the meters.' And he said, 'Did you put money in it?' And I said, 'Yeah.' And he said, 'I think you'll be all right.'
"From that moment, I just wanted to get the f**k out of the room. I just wanted to be anywhere but there. I sat down with my heart beating out of my chest; I was so mortified that I started this meeting off that way. I started giving him one-word answers.
"I just wanted to get out of there. It was horrible, a complete disaster. So obviously, I did not get that job."
DREW BARRYMORE:
The Wedding Singer star told The Sun about a rather humiliating audition during which she had to simulate a sex act.
"I won't say the movie, but they called me in on a Sunday with a casting assistant," Barrymore said.
"They didn't think I was worthy enough of even reading with the casting director. They did it in the basement, and it was a scene where I have to do this oral thing with this guy's hand, and no one was there so I had to do it to myself.
"It was by far the most humiliating experience. I thought, 'They think I'm such s**t that I'm here on a Sunday with the assistant, giving myself a finger in the mouth. This is a low point'."
JAKE GYLLENHAAL:
The actor told The Hollywood Reporter that he wasn't quite across all the minor details when he auditioned for The Lord of the Rings back in the day.
"I remember auditioning [for the role of Frodo] and going in and not being told that I needed a British accent," Gyllenhaal recalled.
"I really do remember Peter Jackson saying to me, 'You know that you have to do this in a British accent?' We heard back it was literally one of the worst auditions."
PATRICK WILSON:
The actor told AOL that he'll never forget the day he was insulted before his audition started.
"I do remember ... one of my first film auditions," he said. "I walked in and I said 'Hi, I'm Patrick Wilson.' The woman went, 'Oh, I thought you were British.'
"And I went, 'why?' And she goes, 'Cause you're 30 and I've never heard of you!' I literally went, 'I've been nominated for two Tonys?' And then walked out of the room."
