With Whanganui's inaugural Light Up Bike Spectacle less than a week away preparation is already well under way.

On Friday morning Bridget Murphy of Rangiwahia Environmental Arts Centre was helping Caylahni McLean-Woon make a shark lantern to put on his bike for next Friday's event at one of two workshops.

The all-ages, all-wheels event organised by the Whanganui District Council will have people circling a 5km flat loop taking in the city's shared pathways including the City to North Mole and Te Tuaiwi pathway through the central city.

A range of wheels, including bike, scooters, buggies, unicycles, skateboards, roller skates and wheelchairs will be dressed up and lit up.

Another workshop to help people make their own bicycle-mounted or hand-held lantern is being held this morning (Saturday) between 9am and 3pm at 131 Victoria Ave (the former Farmers homeware store).

The workshops are suitable for ages 5 and over.

Light Up Bike Spectacle will be held at 5.30pm on Friday, May 4.
