Brothers Ben and Sam O'Dea won the bronze medal in the men's beach volleyball at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

Their story is littered with challenges but the Tauranga-based siblings have relied on their close bond to help them overcome whatever has been thrown in their direction and to achieve their dreams.

The brothers are close – so close that they even think they know each other better than they know themselves. While they have their differences and get on each other's nerves it is the support of the other that helps get them through.

Ben has suffered with injury over the past couple of years leading into the Games and he has missed a lot of training. During that time he had to make a call of whether to have surgery and miss the Gold Coast or battle through – that decision was something he shared and made with his brother.

The O'Dea's sat down with The Herald to talk about their journey, their relationship and their plans to push through to the Tokyo Olympics and help raise the profile of beach volleyball in New Zealand.
