The Government's decision to cut fishing quotas for orange roughy will chop millions of dollars from the national economy, say fishing companies.
The cut, from 1500 tonnes to 800 tonnes in one of the country's two orange roughy fishing zones, follows a 90 per cent quota reduction for the same east coast fishing area last year.
New Zealand's annual orange roughy catch is 13,000 tonnes.
Fisheries Minister Pete Hodgson said the quota reduction would allow depleted fish stocks to rebuild.
