Like former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Helen Clark is not for turning, at least when it comes to donning high heels and wearing short skirts.
Helen Clark told journalists yesterday that she would ignore unsolicited fashion advice sparked by a Brunei newspaper's declaring during Apec that she had fashion model looks.
To a suggestion that she might consider high heels and shorter skirts, Helen Clark said she had a "very competent fashion designer - and high heels, which make one's life a misery, are not about to be purchased."
The Prime Minister said looking credible was "a very important part of the job," and she was "not sure short skirts would help much, or a plunging neckline."
The questions followed the press coverage at Apec, but journalists who accompanied the Prime Minister noted that the Brunei story revealed less about her than it did about the Brunei society's lack of fashion awareness and the local media's worshipful attitude towards its leaders.
