A Mighty River Power company - Tiny Mighty Power - is targeting consumers in small towns which it says are paying too much for power because of the lack of competition.
The company hopes to lure a "reasonable percentage" of the 11,000 customers in Cambridge and Te Awamutu with promises they could save up to 14 per cent on their power bills.
A spokesman said the company hoped to expand beyond the Waikato towns.
