Consents for new homes remained buoyant last month, with 2644 approvals - the highest monthly tally in two years and 1000 more than in September last year.
The total for the year to September was 25,382, maintaining the level of activity seen in the record 12 months to March, when 180
more consents were granted.
Auckland, the usual leader because of its strong apartment growth, dropped to 146 consents in September, 28 more than September last year but less than the plus-400 figures of the previous two months.
Areas to boom this time were North Shore City with 224 consents - the highest monthly tally since records for the area began in April 1976; Christchurch with 256, its highest level since June 1994; Dunedin with 47, the highest total since May 1996; and Queenstown-Lakes with 51, double the usual and its highest tally in two years.
On Auckland's northern fringe, Rodney District reached 100 consents, 11 more than in August.
