TAURANGA BOYS'
The rowing season got off to a windy start at Rotorua's Blue Lake on Saturday. Wind right across the course made it a challenging event for both the novice and under-16 squads who attended.
The under-16 squad began with Daniel Bridgwater and Sheldon Noyce, who gained an incredible third. This
was followed by Cody and Jackson Petit winning race two and enjoying the victory so much they failed to notice they had crossed the line and continued racing a further 400m.
The boys then swapped over and had some mid-table results in the open double but finished strongly with a powerful victory in the under-16 quad.
Tauranga Boys' College students made up the majority of a Tauranga City under-19 team that competed in soccer's prestigious national club championships in Napier. The team made it to the quarterfinals before losing to eventual runners-up Lower Hutt.
Tauranga Boys' junior A volleyball played Whakatane High School first up and had a comfortable win 2-0 in the Bay of Plenty junior qualifying.
They played Western Heights High School in the next game. From the previous weekend this looked like the team to beat. In a close encounter Tauranga went down 19-17 in the third set.
In the third game they played Kawerau High. After winning 25-8 in the first set they lost their way to lose the second set but bounced back to win 15-4 in the third.
Congratulations to Tom Crawford and Josh Taylor, who have been named as finalists in SPARC's 2010 Volunteer Coach Awards for the Bay of Plenty region. Tom Crawford, Dan Looker, Sean Richardson, Eugene Heerschap and Connor Irvine have all been selected to play in the Waikato FC soccer youth team.
