For more than 600 days, Skeeter has called the SPCA Rotorua Centre home.

This lovable, loyal, and mischievous mixed-breed dog has been waiting patiently for a family to give him the life he deserves.

Skeeter arrived at the Centre as a tiny pup, just 5 weeks old, alongside his mum and sister after being rescued by the SPCA Inspectorate on March 11, 2024.

While his sister quickly found a home, Skeeter was overlooked as a puppy — and that missed chance has shaped his journey.

Now almost 2, Skeeter has grown up in the shelter environment, which means he can be shy around new people, places, and loud noises like traffic.

He’s developed some anxiety, but with the right care and patience, Skeeter has the potential to thrive.

According to his SPCA profile, he’s an absolute sucker for affection, loves belly rubs and full-body cuddles, and he is the best receiver of hugs.

“He’s incredibly loyal. Once you’ve taken the time to earn Skeeter’s trust and develop a bond with him, he’ll be your most faithful companion- He’s an overall awesome, delightful dog with so much potential,” his profile reads.

“Shelter life isn’t the best environment for any animal to live long-term, so with Skeeter’s already joyous personality, we know once he’s settled into a real home, he will continue to grow and thrive into a beautiful dog.”

SPCA Rotorua Centre manager Lynne Gillies said as Skeeter wasn’t adopted as a puppy like his sister – he has developed anxiety and fear of new people and environments which can be the downside to living in a centre.

“We’re still not sure why he didn’t catch anyone’s eye when he was a puppy, unfortunately some animals just get looked over and others find homes very quickly.

“Skeeter will need a family or person who is able to visit regularly to build trust before taking him home – he will need to go to a home with no cats or small animals, as well as a quiet home and surroundings so he can settle in and be comfortable with his new family.

“It would be the best Christmas gift to get Skeeter his forever home!”
