A search is underway in Hamilton after a person died in a violent attack on Friday evening.
Police were called to Slim St in Bader Hamilton just before 6pm to reports of a grievous assault. It is understood that the person was stabbed.
Detective Senior Sergeant William Loughrin said a person had died at a residential address and a homicide investigation was under way.
"Police are conducting enquiries to locate the alleged offender and we are committed to resolving this matter as quickly as possible," he said.
A scene examination was taking place at the property, and police were speaking to witnesses.
Anyone who had any information about the incident was urged to contact police on 105 or on the anonymous Crimestoppers line: 0800 555 111.
A St John ambulance spokesperson said two ambulances were sent the scene after receiving a report of the assault at 5.44pm. The number of people injured could not be verified.
One resident on Slim St said there was a lot of flashing lights near the Bader St shopping strip end of the street.
"I didn't hear anything though earlier tonight. The street's always extremely quiet," he said.
The incident comes after a violent 24 hours in Auckland.
On Friday morning a man was seriously injured after being stabbed in a downtown carpark.
On Thursday night a man was killed and a second person injured after a stabbing on the North Shore. One person has since been charged with murder in relation to that incident.
