Four cats have been fatally mauled by dogs in Papamoa.

An investigation into Monday's killings is under way, and residents are being asked to help identify the dogs responsible.

Police received calls last evening reporting a group of aggressive dogs in Papamoa.

A police spokesperson said officers did attend, but the matter was referred to the local council as an animal control matter.

The Tauranga City Council's team leader: animal services, Brent Lincoln, said the team was investigating the attacks and was appealing for information, photos or video footage that could identify the dogs involved.

"Our sincere condolences to the owners who have lost their beloved pets," Lincoln said.

"Please ensure pets are safe and secure while Animal Services conducts its investigation," he said.

Police said anyone concerned about roaming or dangerous animals should contact their local council animal control and anyone who felt threatened by another person should contact police.

To report a roaming dog, a dog attack or if anyone has information about the dogs responsible for this week's attacks, call the Tauranga City Council on (07) 577 7000.
