There were hugs, prayers, lots of smiles, aroha, and full tummies as about 30 to 40 people gathered in Coronation Park for the inaugural Tauranga Christmas in the Park free picnic.
Organised by Claire Morris, and supported by Rachelle and Chris Duffy of Little Big Markets, the free barbecue was put on for the homeless, the lonely and others in need of some Christmas cheer
Morris said she and the team of about 15 volunteers were inspired to hold the festivities in the park by Tracey Carlton, who runs twice-weekly Milo nights in downtown Tauranga.
The free feast included donated hams, salads and baking provided by local businesses and individuals, including Sage and Grace, Doug Jarvis Butchery and Grindz Cafe, she said.
"It's been great to see local businesses coming on board and so amazing to see homeless people from across Tauranga and Mount Maunganui sharing in the festivities," Morris said.
She said it was great to be able to tap into established connections already made with the homeless by Carlton and others to encourage those in real need to come along.
"This is all about bringing some of the most vulnerable in the community together to break bread, share some kai and aroha, and show them we do care about them."
Carlton said she was immensely proud of Morris and other volunteers who stepped up to support those in need particularly at this time of year.
"This is a wonderful thing to be part of. This means the world to us, and it's amazing to see people coming together to share kai and celebrate what Christmas is all about," she said.
"Every member of our society is of value, including our street people. That's something I truly believe. This event shows them we do see and hear them, and care about them."
Ben, who has been homeless for seven years, said: "This is all about love ... We must always care about others and I know someone cares about me no matter what."
Local worker Simon Parore said he had come along to help and brought some homeless guys with him in his car to ensure they did not miss out.
"Praise the Lord, this is an amazing feast ...This is what the spirit of Christmas is really all about, sharing what you have with others who would otherwise go without," he said.
