Beautiful sunny Tauranga was not immune from the cold snap hitting the country early this week.
The cold came on suddenly and Tauranga residents woke up this morning to a chilly 5.8C, according to MetService meteorologist Claire Slymn.
While the actual temp was 5.8C between 6am and 7am, it probably felt colder taking into account wind chill and humidity.
Air from Antarctica sent overnight temperatures into the low single digits.
The thing bringing more cold, frosty mornings is the clear skies. Once it gets cloudy or rainy it won't be quite so cold.
"The cold front came up the country on Sunday and Monday, turning temperatures several degrees colder quickly."
Ms Slymn said Sunday's low was a balmy 9.7C compared to last night's.
The beautiful clear skies in Tauranga came at a price, Ms Slymn said.
"The thing bringing more cold, frosty mornings is the clear skies. Once it gets cloudy or rainy it won't be quite so cold."
She said it was not going to be cold from here on out but winter was definitely coming and these kind of cold mornings and days would become more common.
Tonight was a low of 8C but Thursday night would warm up to a 13C low.
"Thursday there's a front coming through with cloud increasing and winds turn around to northwest, bringing the cloud and warmer overnight temperatures."
However, once the front passed the sunny days would be back along with the cold temps.
The monthly weather outlook for May was yet to be published.
