The mystery surrounding the search for survivors of a sunken car at Maketu deepens as police remain tight-lipped about the crash.
Maketu volunteer firefighters were called to reports of a car plunging into the river in a crash about 11pm Friday but more than three days later, searchers still do not appear to have found any sign of its occupants.
Police this morning refused to release details of the vehicle, believed to be a Subaru wagon, or shed any further light on the search.
Police and volunteers have been combing the shoreline and the National Police Dive Squad were called in on Saturday to search the riverbed to search for survivors. Police today would not say whether divers were back at the river again.
A police communications spokeswoman said "enquiries were still ongoing but there were no further updates".
The Maketu fire brigade and Coastguard have been helping with the search since responding to the crash on Friday.
In a previous article Maketu fire chief Shane Beech and Coastguard president said it was understood a person physically saw the crash "so we are treating it as person or persons involved".
Mr Beech could not be reached this morning.
Coastguard found the submerged wagon about 4am Saturday in the river. It was pulled out later that day.
