A bus carrying a load of tourists was involved in a crash in which a person died today.
Matamata Fire Brigade volunteer support officer Peter Baylis said the crash happened on a sweeping, deep beind on State Highway 29, east of Te Poi, at 11.25am.
He said the approximate 60-seater bus was carrying tourists who had been on an overnight trip after their cruise ship docked in the Tauranga harbour.
The bus was travelling back to Tauranga when the crash happened.
Northern fire communications shift manager Carren Larking said the occupants of the bus escaped unharmed, but a person in the car died.
The crash happened about 1.5km from the intersection with SH24.
Police have confirmed there were no other injuries.
Police have closed SH29 between Stopford Rd and Tauranga Rd and diversions are in place.
The police serious crash and commercial vehicle investigation units are investigating.
