In the last three months there have been 62 incidents of tools being stolen from builders vehicles and sites in the last three months in the Western Bay of Plenty.
Police have urged builders and developers to secure their construction sites.
Inspector Karl Wright-St Clair said thieves were targeting vehicles on roadsides and in driveways.
He said although security can be an issue on construction sites, fencing and having clear signage in relation to entry after hours could help.
"Having the tools of your trade stolen or having your dream home burgled while under construction can be a distressing event.
"We feel for the victims and ask that the community do everything they can to remove the opportunity for thieves and report suspicious behaviour," he said.
