4.28pm: State Highway 2 has reopened in both directions, though traffic was moving slowly and drivers should expect delays heading out of Tauranga through Te Puna.
A reporter at the scene said one car had a smashed up from bumper, while the other vehicle's driver side was "really smashed in".
EARLIER: Two cars have crashed on State Highway 2 in the Bay of Plenty.
Fire Service northern communications centre shift manager Scott Osmond said the cars had collided on the corner of Barrett Rd and SH2 in Whakamarama.
One person was trapped in a vehicle and possibly seriously injured, he said.
A reporter on the way to the scene said traffic was backed up through Te Puna.
Traffic heading away from Tauranga was being diverted down Barrett Rd.
Fire fighters were clearing debris from the road.
Fire communications were notified at about 3.20pm.
Police and ambulance were also on the scene.
