A Matua man who tried to strangle an associate due to jealousy over a woman has been sentenced to seven months home detention and ordered to pay $1000 reparation.
Patricio Andres Alvarez-Riveros, 27, pleaded guilty to one charge of assault with intent to injure, and another of injuring with intent to injure and was sentenced in Tauranga District Court today.
The offences occurred over the course of two days on January 5 and 6, and culminated with Alvarez-Riveros having to be dragged off his victim who awoke with his attacker on top of him and forcefully squeezing his throat with both hands.
He also punched the victim around the head and body.
