Tauranga teachers Anna Robinson and Morgan Lewis have arrived safely in Cairo.
The couple, previously teachers at Otumoetai Intermediate, left Tauranga last week to teach at an international school in Egypt and were mid-flight when violence broke out across the country, killing hundreds.
The chaos erupted when security forces in Cairo, authorised by the new military-backed government, cleared out two Islamist-led sit-ins demanding ousted president Mohammed Morsi be reinstated, igniting violence that has killed more than 1000 people.
Miss Robinson and Mr Lewis arrived in Dubai on August 15 and flew into Cairo on Monday afternoon (Egypt time).
Miss Robinson said they were nervous when arriving at the airport in an email to the Bay of Plenty Times.
"Just arrived and all is well. Was slightly nervous arriving at Cairo airport but found four other teachers on the same flight who are also teaching at the international school. No hassles getting visas and there were no queues or questions. Not surprisingly."
Miss Robinson said they had not seen or heard anything out of the ordinary, although a colleague had heard fighting outside his hotel the previous night.
Other than that, the only unusual thing for the couple had been the early curfew, she said.
"Tried to go to the Vodafone shop, but it closed at 3pm. Many of the shops seem to be closing earlier than usual according to the teachers who were also here last year. Curfew tonight at 7pm, so we're pretty much in our hotel for the rest of the day/night.
"Not quite the experience we all wanted to have, but it's okay for now while we're finding our feet."
Miss Robinson said as far as she was aware, all other international teachers had also stuck with their plans to come to Egypt.
They were due to visit the Red Sea for a team building trip next week, but they would now be going somewhere closer as a large number of checkpoints meant the trip would take too long.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has advised against all tourist and other non-essential travel to Egypt after a national state of emergency was declared in Egypt.
