A surprise guest is hanging out at Waimarino Adventure Park today.
A New Zealand Fur Seal swam up the Wairoa River and made its way onto a pedal boat at the water park.
When park owners Blair and Charlotte Anderson arrived at Waimarino about 9am this morning, the adult seal was perched on a floating dock. It appeared to have an injured flipper.
"He was there resting, then he made his way on to a pedal boat and now it's resting there. It's still there now," Mrs Anderson said.
"He seems happy to be there but he's got a bruise on his [flipper]."
The Department of Conservation visited the water park and checked the seal about 11.30am.
Mrs Anderson said: "DOC said he looked happy and they told us not to interfere. We didn't need to get him moved anyway, he isn't in the way."
Staff at Waimarino named the seal Charlie, as it was a name that fit either gender, she said.
The last time a seal visited the water park was about 30 years ago.
