A 24-year-old man has been arrested in Australia following the murder of former Tauranga singer Tony Williams.
The suspect was found in New South Wales, three months after Mr Williams was found dead in his Gold Coast apartment.
The arrested man will appear in the Port Macquarie local court today, where Gold Coast detectives will apply for this extradition to Queensland.
Detective Superintendent David Hutchinson, the regional crime co-ordinator, said: "The arrest of the man is the culmination of a protracted and detailed investigation conducted by the Gold Coast CIB, the Queensland Homicide Investigation Unit and the State Flying Squad, in conjunction with the NSW Homicide Squad, over the last three months."
Mr Williams was the lead singer of a band, Sex'N'Chocolate, which had regular stints at a local nightclub. He worked by day as an orderly at Gold Coast Hospital.
When Mr Williams failed to turn up for a regular gig on December 23, 2011, a friend and his wife went to the Mermaid Waters complex on Sunshine Boulevard. Mr Williams's bashed body was found inside.
By January, with no major leads, police suggested a scorned lover could have been behind the death. Police divers scoured the canals and waterways in and around Mr Williams' home.
Detective Inspector Brian Swan, of Gold Coast police, said Mr Williams was a popular man, well-liked, highly respected and talented. A number of people had been forthcoming about their relationships with Mr Williams, Mr Swan said.
A post-mortem examination revealed Mr Williams had suffered injuries to his head and body, believed to have been inflicted by a weapon.
