Image 1 of 8: Historic Auckland. Auckland waterfront. 1910 to 1919 New Zealand Herald Archives NZH 14sep04 - IN THE days when the only reasonable way to get to the North Shore was by ferry boat the Auckland Ferry Building, completed in 1912, was a prominent building on the waterfront. These days it is overshadowed by high-rise buildings, despite its roof being raised to add another floor during a restoration project in the 1980s. Today, the buildings dominating the waterfront include the Vero Centre in Shortland St, with its curious ``halo'', and the HSBC bank building, behind the Ferry Building. In the foreground, on the redeveloped former Princes Wharf overseas terminal site, is the Hilton Auckland hotel and apartment blocks, several hundred metres into the harbour from the shoreline in the colony's early days.
