You are right about the kerbstones disappearing. I live in Spring St, Onehunga, so I went to have a look. Where the new concrete kerb was laid, all the rest of the kerbing on that block (and the next block) is bluestone, which makes a lie of the stated official policy of keeping the same type of kerb throughout an area.
I agree it looks suspiciously as if the bluestones may have been taken to install at a profit elsewhere.
The remaining bluestone kerbs on those two blocks of Spring St looked quite sound to me, afterall, that sort of stone is not going to wear out, is it? It would probably outlast you and me, only the mortar between the stones possibly requiring some attention every decade or so.
In some other places I have seen new mortar between old bluestones - was this the process for which the expensive price was quoted?
