Auckland's Ashley Jordan, from Albany, has been named the winner in Mitre 10's Easy As for Kids BIG Pumpkin Competition with a record-breaking pumpkin.
Weighing in at an astonishing 124.4kg, Ashley's pumpkin was just 400g heavier than last year's 124kg winner grown in Ashburton by twelve year old Taylor McKenzie.
Vying for the top title against almost 300 other pumpkins, Ashley's monster was the clear winner at a weigh-in held at Mitre 10 stores across the country.
His pumpkin weighed in at 7kg heavier than the second place pumpkin, which was grown in Cambridge and recorded a weight of 117.5kg. The third heaviest pumpkin was recorded in Napier at 116kg.
The 12-year-old used a secret ingredient to grow his pumpkin to its gigantic size but was tight lipped on what this was as he hoped to keep growing giant pumpkins.
Mitre 10 MEGA Albany General Manager Luke Stock said he got quite a shock when Ashley arrived for the weigh-in.
"We were taken aback when Ashley turned up with his pumpkin. It was huge. We hadn't expected anything quite so big. It took four of us to carry it inside."
"We all want to know what his secret ingredient is but he's not telling."
"He definitely did a great job! We're thrilled he won and hope he'll keep up his gardening.
