Alfred St is to become pedestrian-friendly.
University of Auckland students will soon have less traffic to battle following an Auckland City Council decision to make it a pedestrian- and bus-only zone. Work to make it a direct, quick bus route between the CBD and Newmarket begins on April 2.
Lesieli Oliver, the president of Auckland University Student Association, says the change will be a great move towards a safer environment for students.
``At peak we have 800 students crossing this road every hour, so it gets very dangerous.''
Pedestrians use the street frequently because it links many of the university's main facilities, such as the library, lecture theatres and the food court.
Jonathan Wiseman, a third year student who often uses Alfred St between classes, says cars make up most of the traffic on the street.
``That street is always pretty dangerous. I've seen a lot of people struggling to get across.''
Emergency and university service vehicles, plus bicycles, will continue to have access to the road after April. - by Charlotte Coyle, AUT journalism student
