Howick Baptist Healthcare on Union Rd hopes to get a $14 million makeover to comply with new legislation. If resource consent is granted, seven ageing residential units will be removed to make way for a block of 42 apartments. Construction is due to start in February next year. Manager Val Sugrue says the new Retirement Village Act requires village managers to draw up a prospectus, and there would have been no point simply renovating the property's 10 units to comply with the act. Instead, the three occupied units will be moved to a new location on-site, while the other seven have been sold already. A protected sweet gum tree would also have to be removed. There are 46 people on the waiting list to buy the 42 apartments when they are completed in 2008. The complex of independent one- to three-bedroom units will include barbecue areas and a library, with kitchens for the truly independent, but also central facilities and home help for those who need it. Mrs Sugrue says the swiftness of sales proves there is a strong demand for serviced apartments in Howick/Pakuranga. Any submissions on the development must be lodged with Manukau City Council by November 6.
